“I don’t expect to find inspiration. It just sort of comes. Sometimes you step on a bug and you get inspired.” – Iris Apfel
Starting from the very beginning
Growing up in a family with 2 sisters, with a trendsetter of a mom who was also sought after for her designs in kids’ clothes and nightwear, and a grandmother whose love for dressing up was an inspiration to all, it is no surprise that I ended up wanting to dress up little girls!
I remember sitting beside my mom, watching her as she designed beautiful dresses that created stories in my imagination, of me prancing around, going to places of fun and adventure. Such memories and more from my childhood of my mother designing and making our dresses that were the talk of the town, is what keeps me inspired. As we go through our childhood photographs, I can’t help notice the details that went into our clothes. The little details that gave them the ‘vintage touch’ are what influence my designs today.
The beautiful world around us
The abundance of beauty in nature is what inspires each collection – the colors, the prints, the uniqueness of what colors and patterns go together.
I’ve been fortunate enough to travel extensively over the past few years (before covid-19 happened!) and I am in awe of each culture. The colors and waves of the oceans, the peace and fun at the beaches, the lush abundance of the woods, the expanse and larger than life nature of the mountains, the ever so fascinating wildlife, and how can I not mention the colors, the beauty and the details of the flowers! It’s the thrill of then trying to recreate that pretty flower I saw into a print or embroidery is what inspires me. It’s my attempt at pouring into the home linen and clothes the emotions one feels when we see the exquisiteness that the world around us has to offer.
Some wonderful people
I work closely with local artisans to source the best natural fabric that of course feels good and comfortable when you wear it. I have long discussions with the artisans over the hand embroidery that would be perfect for the product and hand block prints that would just fit in the space. It’s their smiles when they realize the design that they have translated is stylish, the embroidery and printing that they do is chic, is what inspires me.
I enjoy my chats with the mothers who shop from us. I feel a part of their lives when they share their excitement on receiving their orders! I absolutely love it when they share the photographs of their beautiful daughters, their little ‘taramira’, with me! The joy of seeing the mothers and the kids enjoy their clothes and feel good about themselves is ultimately what inspires me.
I hope everyone reading this blog, finds inspiration in their everyday lives, which motivates them to do better! I hope you all find joy and peace in your daily routines. After all, it’s the little things that we do that matter the most ……the beauty is in the details!
