Yellow Love

The colors we surround ourselves with have an impact on our mood. Phrases like ‘feeling blue’ and ‘red with rage’ surely have similar roots. I recall an aunt telling me that when she felt pain, she imagined a lavender shield engulfing the pain, as lavender is supposed to be a calming and healing color, and in sometime she would be absolutely fine. This sparked some curiosity, which led me to an article on color therapy. It gave me an insight into what aspect of our mind or emotion a color can impact.

Yellow is a color a lot of us have a liking for and why not. We see yellow as a joyous and radiant color. It exudes warmth, inspiration and vitality. Yellow is the color of optimism. It conveys youthfulness and fresh energy…. It is sunlight! It’s a color I gravitate towards for the smile it brings to my face and you’ll notice I’ve used it liberally in my home accessories.

Psychology of Yellow

A brightly lit room uplifts our mood. Cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels do so much to make their ambience just right. Wouldn’t you like to visit a place with a nice ambience and color palette vis a vis a place that doesn’t offer the same? Whether we acknowledge it or not, colors tend to have an effect on us psychologically, therefore we cannot underestimate the powerful effect a color or combination of colors can have on people exposed to it – in a living space, restaurant, or hotel.

Yellow is known to create optimism, happiness and confidence for the future. It’s a color that creates a sense of fun, humor, lightness and promotes creativity. Who wouldn’t want some yellow in their lives!?

Making the most of Yellow

Yellow is a mood boosting hue. I don’t think we need to overdo it and cover our walls and home furnishings all in yellow, but a touch of yellow has such a beautiful impact on a space. After a dreary day, you walk into a room with yellow highlights, maybe just a few elements of your home decor - the cushion covers and/or curtains, and it just makes you smile. The best rooms in which to use yellow are hallways as they are usually dark and yellow is a welcoming color. It would be great to use in the room that you spend the most part of your morning in to help create a sunny, happy way to start the day. Adding pops of yellow in the form of cushion covers or upholstery in your work space could help too!

Yellow creates an impression. Whether you paint a complete wall yellow or add just little accents in the form of a table cover in the dining space, or a runner on a console, or cushion covers on the sofa or a bench – yellow will pop and give it a modern touch! I really feel that adding some touches in similar hues throughout your home can give it a warmer and more cohesive feel.

I can’t help wonder if Coldplay knew all this when they wrote the song.
